The Brave and the Bold

One of my stranger acquisitions this past year, The Brave and the Bold, is a covers album featuring Will Oldham on vox with Tortoise backing. It was actually the latter that piqued my interest as well as the inclusion of a Milton Nascimento original. The point of the project was not necessarily to celebrate their obscure influences, but to also honor some FM radio staples, too, as you'll see below.

Elton John > Daniel

rarestbowienineteen

Some very early tracks from ol' David Robert Jones (b. 8 Jan 1947), recorded between 1966-69. As is evinced early on, DB isn't exactly fitting comfortably into any particular style, but unlike more mature works, he's not finding one that pays off musically either. Dispirited by lack of early success following these and several other songs (including an album's worth, as you see above, in 1967), Bowie briefly considered either entering the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Centre, a Buddhist monastery in Eskdalemuir, Scotland, or continuing his pantomime (!!!) training with Lindsay Kemp (also known as the pub landlord in the original The Wicker Man). Suffice to say, a mind was changed, Space Oddity hit the charts, and then eventually the inevitable collaboration with Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth.

Tribalistas

...And we're back. If La Biblioteca should be known for one attribute, it would probably be trying to make lusophones of you all. Por isso, just thought I'd share three tracks from Os Tribalistas, a Brazilian supergroup comprised of Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown. These come from their eponymous debut.

My archiving service is experiencing some transitional pains so I can't post for the time being. Please stay tuned.
